STATE UMPIRES COURSE - SUNDAY, AUGUST 16th, 2020

Published Wed 24 Jun 2020

By being a qualified umpire you have the best seat in the house when umpiring at TTSA Sanctioned tournaments or State Championships. Umpires at these events are paid and although not a lot it will cover petrol costs and lunch.
I recommend the upcoming course as the pathway to become a State Umpire or even just to give you a thorough knowledge of the rules so that you may umpire competently at your own Club (Associate Level). The Officiating Committee (SATTOC) look forward to providing assistance and mentoring to those who attend.

On Sunday 16th August 2020, a State Umpires Course will be conducted by Dr Wing Au (International Umpire) and Ms Lenore Roder (International Umpire). TTSA affiliates are encouraged to promote the event to their membership. The course will cost all participants $80.00 to cover course documentation, administration and delivery, and lunch for the day.

The course will be held at the Maid of Auckland Hotel (926 South Rd, Edwardstown SA 5039) commencing at 10.00am and concluding at approximately 5.00pm. The agenda of the day will include:
• Introduction
• Equipment, clothing and advertising
• Officials and personnel
• Rules and laws governing play
• Lunch (free),
• Misbehaviour
• Hand signals, calls by umpires, and explanations
• Multiple-choice written examination (60 minutes, 75% passing mark)
• Overview follow up activities to complete the qualification

Registrations close on the 24th July 2020

Prior to the date of the course, there will be:
• A series of pre-reading, activities, and discussion in order to facilitate the learning of the attendees.

On passing the written examination, the following additional elements must be completed prior to accreditation being recommended :
• Pass an oral exam (approximately 30 to 40 minutes),
• Complete 10 hours of unsupervised umpiring at a tournament / competition,
• Be mentored for a minimum of four tournament matches
• Completion of 3 ‘Play by the Rules’ (PBTR) online modules (Child Protection, Harrassment and Discrimination & Complaint Handling.
• Lodgement of paperwork (Personal details & code of behaviour)

It should be noted that before an official (umpire or referee) can undertake duties in South Australia, Table Tennis South Australia requires that the official obtain a Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) ‘working with children’ history assessment clearance. SATTOC are able to assist with this process.
